Suara Cooperativa is one of the 58 organizations that have signed the manifesto to denounce discrimination against older people. The current crisis caused by the Covid-19, which affects all citizens, shows, once again, the abuse suffered by older people. A discrimination or old age, and an abandonment that has a special impact among the most vulnerable, disabled, dependent elderly people who do not have a family or social network or are unable to dispose given the current alarming situation.
Ageism, discrimination based on age, is defined as a "process of discrimination and stereotyping in a systematic way towards the elderly due to the fact of being old" (R.Butler), and it is this discrimination the substrate of many situations of elder abuse.
Unfortunately, these events take place very frequently in our society and have been highlighted in recent days due to the involvement of the coronavirus.
For this reason, 58 entities from all over Catalonia that belong to the Movement to stop abuse have joined together to denounce this situation and give visibility to the problem.
