Cohabitem BCN promotes intergenerational home sharing to improve access to housing and tackle unwanted loneliness

Finding affordable housing in Barcelona is becoming increasingly difficult for many young people. At the same time, thousands of older adults live alone and have spare rooms in their homes. Cohabitem BCN was created to connect these two realities and turn them into a shared opportunity.

Led by  Kuvu i Suara Cooperativa, and selected under the "Proactive City" urban innovation programme by the BIT Habitat Foundation of Barcelona City Council, the project promotes safe, voluntary and mutually beneficial intergenerational living arrangements.

The aim is to create a network of shared homes by matching older adults who have a spare room with young people looking for a more affordable housing option. This model fosters meaningful connections, encourages mutual support and contributes to a more cohesive and inclusive city.

A model built on trust and ongoing support

Cohabitem BCN offers a personalised matching process, individual interviews, professional mediation and continuous support throughout the shared living experience. The programme also includes specific safeguards to provide peace of mind and security for both homeowners and young participants.

More than simply sharing a room, Cohabitem BCN is committed to building meaningful relationships between generations, promoting independence, coexistence and mutual support while respecting each person's freedom and individual needs.

We are looking for older adults and young people who want to be part of the change

If you are over 60, live in Barcelona and have a spare room, or if you are a young person looking for an affordable and enriching housing alternative, Cohabitem BCN offers you the opportunity to be part of a truly transformative experience.

Because sharing a home also means sharing experiences, learning and new opportunities in life.
