The Xarxa de Dones del Món project in Pont Major was born from a grant to end child poverty through actions with the family.
More than a dozen women from diverse backgrounds who live in Girona have formed the Xarxa de Dones del Món Association with the desire to become professional in the sewing activity and consolidate a project, which they embarked on a year ago, but how did this journey begin?
The first step was taken by the mothers of the Open Center in the Pont Major neighborhood of Girona, managed by Suara Cooperativa, who wanted to train in sewing. However, what started as a dream has now been woven and become a reality thanks to a project presented by Suara Cooperativa to obtain a grant from the Girona city council, which aimed to reduce child poverty by developing actions with its immediate environment.
The project proposal presented by Suara Cooperativa had two clear lines of action. On the one hand, a sewing learning plan was designed that aimed to train, empower and generate opportunities for mothers at the Open Center. On the other hand, it also emphasized the key role that women play in the well-being and development of their children, for which it placed special emphasis on the need to strengthen parental, personal and community skills.
In order to get this project rolling, with an execution period between December 2024 and December 2025, first of all, a community mediator with training in sewing was added to the team. This has been in charge of the tasks of technical and community support of the group, in which 29 women from the Open Center were initiated.

From there, the women began to meet in two weekly sessions, one in the morning and another in the afternoon, to receive this training. However, due to the involvement of its participants and the desire to continue in the project, the training was progressively expanded to four weekly sessions.
This also led to taking a step further to combine the technical learning spaces in sewing with group spaces oriented towards personal growth, cooperative work and empowerment.
The mission of Suara Cooperativa is the transformation of the social environment and this project fully responds to this objective, since the training and empowerment of mothers has not only opened doors for them and generated new opportunities for them, but has also improved the lives of the people around them, such as their sons or daughters.
In addition, the establishment of the Xarxa Dones del Món association, in which eleven mothers have been involved, has also allowed the support of the community mediator to be maintained. However, this new scenario is an opportunity, but it also generates new challenges and the association has a new challenge: the search for resources that will allow the continuity of the project and its social impact in the territory.
