CICOPA, the international organization of industrial and service cooperatives, has published this Monday September 25 its second global report on "Cooperatives and Employment". Based on data from 156 countries, the report shows that employment in or within cooperatives reaches at least 279.4 million people worldwide, i.e. 9.46% of the internationally employed population.
For Bruno Roelants, Secretary General of CICOPA, "employment is one of the most important contributions made by cooperatives worldwide. This report shows that people involved in cooperatives constitute a high enough percentage to be considered an important actor in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations, as well as to the global debate on the "Future of Work" driven by the International Labour Organization. In addition, the intention of the study is to improve the methodology and quality of cooperative statistics".
