Anticipating risks without compromising privacy

Population ageing and the increase in single-person households are creating new challenges in ensuring safe, independent and high-quality living at home. More and more older adults live alone or require some form of support in their daily lives, while families and professional services are looking for new ways to support them and anticipate potential risks.

Changes in everyday routines can often be an early indication that something is not right. However, these signs may go unnoticed until the situation develops into an emergency.

The challenge is to strengthen prevention and monitoring at home without invading people’s privacy or creating a feeling of constant surveillance.

Discreet technology that provides support in the background

DOMOBOI is a smart home support pilot project led by Suara Cooperativa in Ribera d’Ebre, in collaboration with researcher Alberto Labarga Gutiérrez and with the support of the Department of Social Rights.

The project combines technology with person-centred care to identify significant changes in daily routines and help anticipate potential risks, improving support and monitoring at home.

DOMOBOI is designed as a non-intrusive solution: it does not use cameras or invasive surveillance systems. Through sensors and the analysis of activity patterns in the home, such as electricity consumption trends, the system can detect relevant variations in usual household behaviour.

When a change that may require attention is identified, an alert is generated within a previously agreed support protocol. The professional team can assess the available information, contact the person or their support network and take action when necessary, always based on professional judgement.

The solution also includes a platform accessible via web or mobile, allowing professional teams and caregivers to view events, receive alerts and add follow-up comments.

Technology, professional expertise and shared care

DOMOBOI is based on a model in which technology does not replace care or human contact. Instead, it becomes a support tool that enables more informed decisions and better-targeted assistance.

The service combines four key elements:

  • Discreet collection of activity patterns, without cameras.
  • Identification of significant changes in usual routines.
  • Generation of alerts when signs requiring review are detected.
  • Assessment and response by the service, always based on professional judgement.

The project is built through collaboration between the people receiving support, families, support networks, professional teams and technology partners. This shared approach makes it possible to adapt the support protocol to each person’s needs, preferences and circumstances.

DOMOBOI’s innovation lies not only in the technology itself, but also in the way it is integrated into a respectful, preventive care model centred on rights, dignity and personal independence.
