Connecting two realities that coexist in Barcelona

Accessing affordable housing in Barcelona is becoming increasingly difficult for many young people. At the same time, many older adults live alone and have a spare room in their homes. These are two realities that often develop separately but can become a shared opportunity.

A network of safe, supported shared homes

Cohabitem BCN, led by Kuvu and Suara Cooperativa with the support of the Barcelona City Council’s BIT Habitat Foundation, promotes voluntary, safe and mutually beneficial intergenerational living arrangements for everyone involved.

The project connects older adults who have a spare room with young people looking for a more affordable housing alternative. Through a personalised process, compatible profiles are identified based on their interests, habits, needs and expectations regarding shared living.

Beyond simply sharing a home, Cohabitem BCN builds relationships based on trust, respect and mutual support. Participants receive professional support before, during and after the start of the living arrangement, helping to create a safe, stable experience adapted to each person’s circumstances.

Living arrangements built on trust

Each living arrangement is prepared through individual interviews, a personalised selection process and an assessment of each person’s preferences, habits and expectations.

An artificial intelligence-based compatibility system helps identify profiles with the greatest potential to be a good match. This technology is always complemented by professional judgement and the final decision of the participants.

The process includes a cohabitation agreement, a trial period, professional mediation, ongoing follow-up and a 360° guarantee fund, providing safety and peace of mind throughout the entire experience..
